Good Morning and Good Evening!

When we all wake up in the morning, or when we need an after-dinner pick-me-up, there’s no better drink to turn to then bourbon coffee! In my case, I love a good doppio espresso. Since I also love bourbon, I started thinking of a knockout after-dinner cocktail to keep the guests entertained and the energy levels high. It’s too easy to make a double shot of espresso and then plop in a shot of bourbon, so I turned to another drink I love… the Flat White!

What’s a Flat White?

A Flat White, by definition, is a double shot of espresso topped with milk that should be heated to a medium consistently so it does not turn into bubbling froth. The heated milk is then gently poured in with the espresso to create a velvety texture.

Take this delicious and heart warming espresso drink, add a little Kentucky to it and vualá, the Kentucky Flat White! Although, in this case we’ve found the perfect whiskey to perfect the drink, and it’s not from Kentucky… from Berkeley, California, Mosswood Distillery’s Espresso Barrel Finish Whiskey. The bottle we are using is the Cask Strength version of batch #4, bottled by hand on January 22nd, 2015 for Healthy Spirits‘ Whiskey Club release in March. Mosswood Distillery describes the release as such:

“Enjoy the Espresso barrel and its long standing history with Mosswood. This was our second ever release and are proud of its continued results. Once the whiskey has matured, it is finished in a barrel seasoned with a cold brew of Four Barrel Coffee‘s Espresso Roast. As a result, the whiskey has notes of milk chocolate, roasted nuts, red fruits and coffee. The finish is subtle yet bold, with hints of coffee balanced against a sweet undertone.”

The powerful flavor of the coffee that comes through the whiskey elevates the drink as a heavy hitting coffee cocktail. The benefits of the cask strength version gives you the ability to add a smaller shot so the coffee flavor still shines through the drink, but also maintains the buzz you want.

The Recipe: Cold

Grab a shaker and fill with ice. Combine the following ingredients:

– 1 oz Bourbon/Whiskey
– 2.5 ozs of Bourbon Cream
– Double shot of Espresso

To finish the cocktail, garnish with cinnamon or chocolate shavings, place a few coffee beans on top for the aroma.

The Recipe: Hot

Grab a mixing glass. Combine the following ingredients:

– 1 oz Bourbon/Whiskey
– Double shot of Espresso

Stir the ingredients until well blended. Pour the mixture into the serving glass, or coffee mug. Begin to heat 2.5 ozs of Bourbon Cream in a jug by steaming it, or heating in a small saucepan. Once the bourbon cream is decently hot, gently pour the cream in with the espresso and whiskey mixture. Serve!
